We have gotten off to a great start to the 2022 - 2023 school year in the BCES library! It has been so great to reconnect with learners and get to know some of our new friends!
Some highlights of our first week back in the library: 4th & 5th graders learned how to use the self checkout mode in our library circulation system, a great step in helping them become more independent library users! 3rd graders completed an "about me activity" sharing some fun information about reading interests as well as topics they want to learn more about. 2nd graders heard the story Goldie Socks and the 3 Libearians, a fun twist of the original Goldilocks story. 1st graders heard the story The Bad Seed Goes to the Library, then decorated their shelf markers. Many of our Kindergartners, and all of our preK, got to see our library for the first time! They had a great time hearing a fun book (Duncan the Story Dragon and No T-Rex in the Library) and exploring some of the great books in our library! Coming up next week: Review scavenger hunts for 4th and 5th grade A library mapping activity for 3rd grade Location scavenger hunts for 1st and 2nd grade Book care lessons and first checkout for KG We are so excited for a fantastic school year!

The end of the school year is quickly approaching! With that in mind, it's time to start bringing back the library books! Book checkouts for this school year will be ending on Wednesday, June 1st.
This is that time of year where we now asking for everyone's help in getting the books back to the library! As we wrap up the 2021 - 2022 school year, we need to start getting the library ready for next year! In the upcoming weeks we will be taking the time to make sure all of the books are back where they belong on the shelves! We currently have many overdue books that we are hoping will find their way back to the library over the next couple weeks. Please check at home and at school for any library books. If you have any questions about missing books, please let me know! Thank you! Our library has been a busy and exciting place for the last few months! Here are some updates on recent library activities! We recently kicked off our "awards season" in the library! 4th & 5th graders viewed trailers for several Newbery winning books, kindergartners learned about the Caldecott medal, and 1st - 3rd graders began reading books from our Chickadee Book Award list! Our most recent Chickadee Book Award selection was Old Rock (Is Not Boring) by Deb Pilutti. After reading this fun book about the exciting life of a rock, several classes participated in rock science activities. We learned, in our science experiments, that limestone fizzles with vinegar, and pumice floats! After our experiments, we tried out some of the rock slime that Mrs. Parker made! We had a lot of fun with that! Several of our kindergarten students have been learning about bears in their homerooms so, as part of our Caldecott unit, we read the Caldecott Honor book Blueberries for Sal, by Robert McCloskey. We then followed that with a fun building challenge! Students had to design a way to get the bear from one hill to the hill with blueberries! We had a great time doing these activities! Many more fun and exciting library activities are being planned for our learners! Our BCES learners have gotten off to a fantastic start in the library! It is wonderful to have all of the classes back in the library again.
After spending some time reviewing our library routines and expectations, we jumped into some exciting activities! Our first few weeks together included scavenger hunts, MakerLab visits, Dot Day activities, and many exciting books. The enthusiasm among our learners as they explored the library and participated in activities was amazing! I am looking forward to another busy, exciting year in our library! Wow, this year has certainly flown by! It feels like we were just returning to school and now we are just a couple weeks away from summer vacation!
It's probably not too surprising that I plan to be doing a lot of reading over the next couple of months. Summer is my favorite time to get a head start on reading many of the fantastic new books that will be waiting in the library for our learners when they return in the fall! Are you looking for some reading ideas for the summer? I have put together a list of some great book suggestions for our learners! Click here for my summer reading suggestions lists! Have a fantastic summer! I can't wait to see everyone again in the 2021 - 2022 school year! One of the most popular parts of our library has been our exciting MakerLab! Full of a variety of supplies that our learners can use to design, create, and engineer, this fun room has become a favorite place for many to use during our library sessions!
At this time, most classes are unable to use the MakerLab, however I have created a Virtual MakerLab for our learners to visit! This site has many online options for our learners that are missing our MakerLab! Here is the link to our Virtual MakerLab! I'm looking forward to when we can have everyone use the library's MakerLab again! 2021 brought an exciting change to our library program: the return of classes to the library!
With new procedures in place, we were very happy to welcome our classes into the library for the book selection part of their library time. While we will continue to do the library instruction in classrooms, our class meetings will now conclude in the library for book selection! We began this new format the first week back after break, with the 5th graders being the first group to visit the library. We have begun adding in other grades and, this coming week, will be welcoming back the remaining grades! I am particularly excited to be showing our library to our kindergarten and pre-K students, many of whom have not yet been in our school library! After several months of using the "mobile library" it has been wonderful to have students back in the library! The first part of our school year has certainly flown by! It is hard to believe that it is almost December.
While we wish that we could be seeing our classes in the library, we have loved connecting with our students in their classrooms with our mobile library! It has been amazing to see the library books back in the hands of our readers. In addition to using the classroom visits to bring books to the students, I also have been using the time to provide library and information skills instruction to our learners. During the visits, I will often give a library-related lesson, which is occasionally followed with a Seesaw activity to do at home. I also have been using Seesaw to send reminders about upcoming library cart visits so that students will know when to bring their books back! Our library schedule has been a bit different this year than in the past, so I hope that the Seesaw reminders has been helpful in communicating when we will be visiting classrooms! I'm looking forward to upcoming visits with the classrooms and sharing many great books and library skills with our learners! Welcome back! I am so excited for the 2020 - 2021 school year.
For now, our learners will be visited in their classrooms by our library cart. During their mobile library visits, learners will have the opportunity to select new books to borrow from our library cart. I will also be using Seesaw often for library instruction, so be on the lookout for Library Seesaw activities! I have had the opportunity to connect with many classes over the past week through our mobile library, and it was wonderful to see everyone! I will try to stock the library cart with a wide selection of books. However, students are also welcome to request books ahead of time through our library catalog. To learn how to do this, click here for a how-to video. Requested books will be delivered to the classrooms during their scheduled mobile library time. Students may also request book topics on this Google Form. Please reach out to me with any questions! What an exciting, and unusual, school year we just had! The 2019 - 2020 school year has wrapped up, and it certainly was full of a lot of changes! I would like to share our library's end of year report with you. This report shares top circulated items as well as some of the exciting activities our learners did in our library! Click on the file below to see our end of year library report! I am so excited for the upcoming school year and being together in our library again!
